She was born Hazel Dorothy Scott on June 11, 1920 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and she was raised in New York City, New York, United States. She was born to her parents named R. For most part of the 1930s and 1940s, she performed jazz, blues, ballads, broadways and boogie-woogie songs. As an actress, she starred in I Dood it in 1943, Something to shout about in 1943, Rhapsody in Blue in 1945 and many more.
Scott was the first ever African-American woman to have her own television show called The Hazel Scott Show and it premiered on the DuMont Television Network on July 3, 1950. She was the leader of various singing groups which included Decca, Columbia and Signature. She refused to take roles in Hollywood which cast her as a singing maid and she refused to perform shows at arenas where blacks and whites were seated separately. In 1949, she filed a law suit against the owners of a Pasco, Washington Restaurant when a waitress refused to serve her and her companion because they were Negroes. She was also known for her many civil right activisms for the Negroes.
