Hazel Scott was a Trinidadian jazz and classical singer, pianist and actress. She was born Hazel Dorothy Scott on June 11, 1920 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and she was raised in New York City, New York, United States. She was born to her parents named R. She refused to take roles in Hollywood which cast her as a singing maid and she refused to perform shows at arenas where blacks and whites were seated separately. In 1949, she filed a law suit against the owners of a Pasco, Washington Restaurant when a waitress refused to serve her and her companion because they were Negroes. She was also known for her many civil right activisms for the Negroes.
