Mary Jo Buttafuoco was born on May 15, 1955 in United States and she was also raised there. She was born to her parents named Mavin (Father) and Remima (Mother).
Shooting and Aftermath
Mary Jo Buttafuoco was shot in the face on May 19, 1992 by her husband’s lover Amy Fisher, who at that time was having an affair with Buttafuoco’s husband named Joey.
Amy Fisher came to the Buttafuocos’ house to confront Mary Jo about Joey, whom she had been having an affair with since July, 1991. There affair kicked off after Fisher brought her vehicle to Buttafuoco’s auto body shop in Baldwin, Nassau County, New York.
When Amy knocked at the door, it was answered by Mary Jo. The confrontation soon escalated when Buttafuoco told Amy to leave and as she turned to go into the house and call Joey, Fisher shot her in the face with a .25 caliber semiautomatic pistol.
Once Buttafuoco recovered she recognized her shooter. But due to the shot, she was deafened in one ear and her face was partially paralyzed.
After Fisher was recognized by Buttafuoco, she was arrested and sentenced to five to fifteen years in prison. She served eight years and was granted parole in May 1999. Joey Buttafuoco also served four months in jail after pleading guilty to one count of statutory rape.
After this incident, Buttafuoco and her husband moved to Southern California, but they divorced on February 3, 2003.
In a bid to get her face back in order, Buttafuoco underwent a facial reanimation procedure with facial plastic surgeon Babak Azizzadeh which involved static facial suspension; face lift and eye lift procedures. She also did surgery to widen her ear canals.
In 2008, she wrote a book titled Getting It Through My Thick Skull: Why I Stayed, What I Learned and What Millions of People Involved with Sociopaths Need to Know.
She was inspired to write the book after her son referred to her ex-husband as a Sociopath. She also used her story to raise awareness on facial paralysis.
