He was born to his parents named Harriet Larkin (Mother) and Paul Larkin (Father). As a child, he suffered from stuttering and this made him to have an emotionally troubled childhood. By the time he was twelve years old, he got into scat singing and he did so until he turned 14 years old. He grew up with a brother named Bill Larkin

In 1990, he relocated to Berlin, Germany and in 1995, he became very famous and by that year, he had already sold over six million records. His two singles titled Scatman’s World and Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop) brought him much success.
In 1996, he released his second album titled Everybody Jam!. He also released another album titled Take Your Time in 1999 and in 2001, his associates released an album titled Listen to the Scatman!
