Yo-Yo Ma was born on the 7th of October, 1955 in Paris, France, he was born to Chinese parents, his mother was named Marina Lu, a singer and his father was named Hiao-Tsuin Ma, a Violinist and Professor of Music at Nanjing National Central University, he also grew up with a sister named Yeou-Cheng Ma, who played Violin before becoming a Pediatrician, Ma and his family relocated to New York when he was seven years of age.
Ma began to play Cello at the young age of four, by the time he was seven years old, he had already performed for famous personalities such as Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, by the time he was eight years old, he appeared on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson and he also performed in front of the Audience.
Ma attended Trinity School which is located in New York but he later transferred to the Professional Children’s School, from where he graduated at the age of 15, he enrolled at the Julliard School at the age of 19, he attended the Columbia University but later dropped out and later enrolled at Harvard College, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Harvard in 1976 and in 1991, he received a honorary doctorate from Harvard.

Yo-Yo Ma appeared on John William’s soundtrack to the Hollywood film Seven Years in Tibet in 1997, in 2000, he also got featured on the Soundtrack of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, in 2003, he appeared on Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, he went on to collaborate with Williams for the 2005 film soundtrack Memoirs of a Geisha.
